Over 100,000 hedge plants are grown every year at Butterwick Trees. We do a special offer pack for farmers and people who want a native hedge, it comprises of:

  • 70% Hawthorn
  • 20% Blackthorn
  • 10% Mix Crab Apple, Field Maple, Hazel, Guelder Rose.

Priced at £3.15 per metre - INCLUDING RABBIT SPIRALS AND CANES

Each pack is based on 6 plants per metre and should be planted in a double row, 30cm between each plant and 30cm between the rows.

Tip! Plant 3cm deeper than the compost plug and tread well in!

We can add Holly to the mix if you want an evergreen content, or Dog Rose if you want a more thorny barrier.

Ornamental Hedges

Spindle Bush – Superb autumn colour
Green Beech – Keeps leaves well in winter
Purple Beech – Purple leaves
Hornbeam – Fast growing and keeps leaves in winter
Field Maple – Bright red new growth in spring and brilliant yellow leaves in autumn

Spacing for ornamental hedges: plant a double row 60cm between each plant and 30cm between the rows.

How to plant a farm hedge

Clear weeds in summer prior to planting, plant into weed free area.
Make a slit (narrow drainage spade is ideal!).
Put plug in slit and firm well in.
Only plant when soil is moist.
Push in cane and put on rabbit spiral.
Best to Mulch with farm yard manure.
Keep weed free for 2 years, use a directed spray in early summer keeping chemicals off leaves of hedge plant

How to plant an ornamental hedge

For best results especially in poor soil conditions it is best to take out a trench and back fill with a compost and soil mix. Plant into this mix, keep weed free and well watered.

* contributing to the Durham Biodiversity Action Plan for hedgerows
* influencing the development of legislation and policy
* undertaking and supporting hedgerow surveys.

Field Boundary Restoration Grant

The partnership provides financial assistance for renovating and planting hedges through the Field Boundary Restoration Grant (FBRG) scheme.
